Elitac actively collaborates with commercial partners, designers as well as research institutions (Royal Netherlands Army, TNO, by-borre, Pauline van Dongen) to enable wearable technology development.

Below you find a showcase of our latest (inter)national projects.

MNB

Mission Navigation Belt

In 2013, Elitac won the Defence Innovation Competition to improve soldiers situational awareness during complex military operations. In close cooperation with end-users of the Royal Netherlands Army, we developed a wearable with integrated vibration motors to let soldiers feel direction. The user can follow a route along different waypoints, and feels the direction and distance of the next waypoint. The navigation information is presented discrete and intuitively, allowing the user to react immediately in critical situations.

The MNB 2.0 has all electronics fully integrated and can be used as a stand-alone system. The MNB contains an integrated microprocessor, battery, GPS, compass, 7 vibration motors for waypoint navigation and 1 vibration motor for system feedback. A bluetooth connection can be easily set-up using an NFC tag in the shirt, or placed elsewhere on the equipment.

Sentaz

Sentaz: Tactile Navigation integrated in the car seat

Professional drivers, in particular drivers of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances, are working under conditions that require a high mental effort. This is caused by a combination of high driving speed and exposure to a high level of visual and auditive signals in the car. Utilising touch results in a reduction of reaction time and mental effort, which is proven by TNO research. Sentaz has developed an innovative turn-by-turn navigation system that guides drivers by gentle vibrations in their seat. This tactile navigation system has been developed with, and successfully tested by, end-users.

Sensuit

We integrate vibration electronics in firefighters apparel to provide them with additional information such as position, navigation and communication.

Firefighters are essential and inevitable to public safety; saving others live by placing themselves in great danger. The SenSuit is a wearable that enables a tactile communication between commander and firefighter to make this hazardous work safer. Together with Frauenhofer Gesellschaft, S-Gard and EagleScience, Elitac is working on a tracking and communication system that lets the commander localize firefighters in the building, and enables to communicate and coordinate them. The suit enables firefighters to sense this information continuously on their skin which ensures a decreased cognitive load and an increased situational awareness.

For TNO we developed a glove with 16 integrated vibration motors. The glove fits most adults and is hand washable.
The glove is a perfect example of how we developed a research tool within just weeks, that allows TNO to verify their ideas regarding feedback on the hand. The glove is plug-and-play and is connected through the research environment using our software API.

FysioPal

To fortify the body in re-establishing its natural demeanour, the collaboration between Elitac and Pauline van Dongen has resulted in a smart top entitled FysioPal. FysioPal aims to help avoid health issues and rehabilitate the body caused by incorrect postures and upper-body positions.

FysioPal functions as a second skin that measures haptic signals around the neck, shoulders and back of the body. The FysioPal product consists of a top with integrated hardware, designed to be worn under regular clothing, and a smartphone app which visualises collected data on the wearer’s body posture. When the wearer succumbs to an unhealthy posture, the smart tank top communicates a gentle reminder through vibration to rehabilitate the body position. Thanks to the sensorial properties and communication software, FysioPal is ideal for one to wear during office hours.

Tactile Sleeve for Social Touch

Within the /Commit project the HvA and UTwente developed a proof-of-concept that enabled social touch over distance. Stroking, tapping or touching of your TaSST sleeve is send to the sleeve of another person in the room or elsewhere, creating possibilities of communication or social touch.

Elitac was asked to develop a prototype that was suitable for use by the deaf blind: A  target group with high demands regarding comfort, wearability, seams etc. Every little detail is noticed by the wearer and can lead to discomfort or is seen as an invitation to explore, fiddle, pick or even disassemble the sleeve.

The new sleeve is washable, with all electronics nicely tucked away. Pressure sensing is combined with vibration feedback, and can both be used as input and feedback.
